Does melatonin make you sleep longer?

Usually, I fall asleep quite late and then wake up automatically after just 5-6 hours, even on weekends. I'm always feeling tired. I'm wondering if taking melatonin could help me sleep for a longer duration, maybe 7-8 hours consistently.

Honestly, don't stress too much if you wake up early. Melatonin is mostly just to help you fall asleep, not necessarily to keep you asleep for 10 hours. If you want to sleep longer, try using blackout curtains, they really help!

Standard melatonin pills only stay in your system for a short time, so they won't help you sleep longer. Instead of buying expensive long-release melatonin, maybe check if a basic vitamin deficiency is keeping you awake. A simple blood test is much cheaper in the long run.

When my daughter was having trouble staying asleep, our doctor explained that regular melatonin doesn't make you sleep longer. It just helps you nod off. We had to focus on a strict bedtime routine and a warm bath before sleep instead.

I struggled with waking up at 3 AM every night. Regular melatonin did not help me sleep longer at all; I would just fall asleep fast and then wake up wide awake. My doctor finally suggested a different routine, so don't rely on it for sleep duration.

I am looking for something to help me stay asleep for at least 7 hours because I keep waking up. Does melatonin not work for staying asleep then? Should I ask my doctor for something else instead?
