Does melatonin help you sleep longer?

Usually, I fall asleep easily, but then I wake up around 3 AM and can't go back to sleep. My daughter suggested melatonin might help. I'm curious if it not only helps you fall asleep but also helps you stay asleep longer through the night.

In my experience, melatonin only helps you fall asleep initially, but it doesn't guarantee you will sleep longer. Drinking a warm cup of chamomile tea or rubbing mustard oil on your feet works better for deep, long sleep. If your sleep is constantly broken, please show a doctor.

Actually, standard melatonin releases quickly, so it might not help you sleep longer if you tend to wake up at 2 AM. For my son, the doctor explained that normal melatonin is just for falling asleep. You might need to look into other reasons if you can't stay asleep.

I also struggle with waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to sleep again. Does melatonin really help with that, or is it only for people who can't fall asleep at night? I am a bit hesitant to start taking tablets.

I can only share what happened to me—when I took regular melatonin, I fell asleep very fast but still woke up after 4 hours. My pharmacist friend told me there are time-release versions, but I haven't tried those. That was just my personal experience with it.

My grandmother always recommended warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg to stay asleep longer. However, when I asked my doctor about melatonin, he explained that standard doses don't necessarily extend sleep duration. It's best to discuss your specific symptoms with a physician.

Generally, it's great for helping you nod off, but not always for keeping you asleep all night! 😴 If you want to sleep longer, try setting a regular bedtime and keeping your room super dark. Sweet dreams! ✨
