Does melatonin affect the liver?

Melatonin has been something I take occasionally to help with my sleep schedule, especially after late-night shifts. My mother recently mentioned that some supplements can affect the liver, so now I'm a bit worried. Could taking melatonin impact my liver health?

My father always says that anything synthetic we consume puts load on the liver. When my doctor suggested melatonin for my sleep issues, he mentioned it is generally safe but people with pre-existing liver conditions should avoid it. It is best to get a liver function test if you are worried.

Bro, I use melatonin gummies sometimes during exams, but I looked this up recently. Usually, normal doses don't harm the liver because it's already produced in our bodies. But if you take too much, obviously everything gets processed through the liver, so don't abuse it.

I was taking heavy doses of melatonin for months and then had a routine blood check where my liver enzymes came out slightly high. My doctor asked me to stop melatonin immediately, and after a month, my levels went back to normal. Be very careful with the dosage.

Don't stress too much about this. Melatonin is metabolized by the liver, but standard low doses are highly unlikely to cause any harm to a healthy liver. Just avoid taking high doses over a long period, and you'll be perfectly fine. Let me know if you need help finding a good doctor.

Look, your liver has to process every supplement or pill you swallow. Under normal limits, melatonin won't cause damage, but if you have fatty liver or drink alcohol heavily, you must ask a doctor first. Don't play doctor with your own organs.

I totally get it, worrying about organ health while trying to solve sleep issues is so stressful. Typically, melatonin is quite safe for the liver in low doses, but our bodies are all different. If you have any ongoing health issues, just a quick chat with your GP will give you peace of mind.
