Does magnesium interfere with thyroid medication?

I've been taking thyroid medication for years now. I'm thinking of starting magnesium for my muscle cramps, but I'm worried if it will interfere with my existing medicines. Should I be concerned about interactions?

Yes, magnesium can significantly decrease the absorption of thyroid hormones like levothyroxine. You must maintain a gap of at least 4 hours between your thyroid medication and any magnesium supplement. Please discuss this with your doctor to adjust your schedule safely.

I love my morning tea and breakfast, but with thyroid pills, you have to wait on empty stomach anyway. If you are taking magnesium too, don't mix them up in the morning! Keep your magnesium for the night time so you can enjoy your morning meals peacefully.

Hey, don't worry, it is very easy to manage. Just keep a safe gap of about four to five hours between both the tablets. Taking thyroid medicine in the morning and magnesium at night is the safest way to ensure both work properly. Take care!

I have been on thyroid medication for ten years and started magnesium for sleep last year. My doctor strictly told me to never take them together. I take my Thyronorm at 6 AM and my magnesium at 9 PM, and my TSH reports have stayed perfectly normal.

It absolutely does interfere. Magnesium binds with the thyroid hormone in your gut, making your thyroid pill useless if taken together. Take your thyroid medicine first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and take magnesium only after dinner. Simple.

It is always safer to get your magnesium from natural foods like spinach and bananas as they don't interfere as heavily. But if you must take a supplement, keep a long gap of several hours. If you feel sudden fatigue or heart palpitations, please see your doctor immediately.
