Does magnesium affect kidney?

I'm taking magnesium supplements for muscle cramps, but my friend just cautioned me about kidney health. Can magnesium intake, especially supplements, negatively affect the kidneys? I want to make sure I'm not doing any harm.

My husband has a mild kidney issue and our doctor strictly told us to avoid taking any magnesium supplements without asking him first. High magnesium can put extra load on weak kidneys. Please get a kidney function test done first.

My son had some kidney-related filtration issues last year. We had to be so careful with his mineral intake, including magnesium in his diet. Please don't give any supplements directly, always let the pediatrician guide you.

If your kidneys are healthy, normal magnesium from food like almonds or palak is perfectly fine. But if you already have some kidney trouble, even daily supplements can build up in the blood. Better to do a simple blood test and consult your doctor.

It is so stressful when you are trying to manage kidney health and don't know what is safe to eat. I went through the same fear with my father's reports. Just take it one step at a time and trust your nephrologist's advice.

Having thyroid issues means I get routine blood checkups every six months. My doctor always monitors my kidney function and electrolyte levels before prescribing magnesium. Regular testing is the only way to be safe.

Yes, magnesium is processed by your kidneys, so any pre-existing kidney disease makes it hard for your body to filter it out. Unless a doctor specifically prescribes it, please avoid over-the-counter magnesium tablets.

Actually, my gym trainer told me to take magnesium pills for muscle cramps, but my dad made me check with a doctor first. Good thing I did, because too much of it can actually strain your kidneys if you don't drink enough water.
