Does hydroxyapatite cause kidney stones?

I recently started taking a new dental supplement that contains hydroxyapatite, as my dentist suggested it. My brother suffers from kidney stones, and I want to be careful. Can hydroxyapatite supplementation potentially cause kidney stones?

I totally get it, whenever we hear about any calcium compound, our mind immediately goes to painful kidney stones. But hydroxyapatite is mostly used in toothpaste or bone supplements and behaves differently. Still, it is always a relief to check with your family doctor before starting any new supplement.

Usually not, especially if it is just in your toothpaste. If you are taking oral bone supplements with it, just keep your daily water intake high to prevent any stone formation.

I have been using hydroxyapatite toothpaste for almost a year now for my sensitive teeth. Absolutely no issues with my kidneys or anything else. It is just a dental ingredient, so you don't even swallow it, chill out.

Whenever I have such doubts, I prefer visiting a top-tier hospital instead of self-diagnosing. My physician told me that brushing with it is completely safe, but if you're taking oral supplements, you must get a proper prescription. Ask your doctor clearly during your next visit.

Don't blindly believe half-baked info on social media claiming calcium alternatives are dangerous. There is a huge difference between swallowing massive calcium doses and using mineral toothpaste. Verify the facts with a qualified nephrologist or dentist before making changes.

Great, another thing to worry about at 2 AM! Honestly, unless you are eating tubes of toothpaste for breakfast, you shouldn't be getting kidney stones from this. Just drink your 3 liters of water and get some sleep.
