Does hydroquinone cause cancer?

Using creams with hydroquinone for my pigmentation for a while now, recommended by a local beauty parlor. Lately, heard some scary things online about it. Is there any truth to the claim that hydroquinone can cause cancer with prolonged use?

Honestly, staying up till 3 AM googling skincare ingredients will give you more anxiety than actual health issues. There are some old animal studies that raised concerns, but in humans, it is mostly banned in some places just to prevent misuse. Just use it under a dermatologist's guidance and stop reading sketchy forums at night.

There is no definitive proof that hydroquinone causes cancer in humans when used as a cream. However, it can cause severe skin irritation if used incorrectly. It is always safest to talk to your dermatologist before starting any strong pigmentation creams.

I usually worry more about whether my extra butter naan will cause me trouble, but I did ask my sister about this cream since she is a skin expert. She said as long as you aren't eating it with your food, a prescribed topical cream is perfectly safe for short periods. Don't stress too much about the scary internet headlines.

I got so scared after reading online articles about hydroquinone bans that I threw my pigmentation cream away. Has anyone else felt this sudden panic while starting skin treatments? My doctor says it is safe for 3 months but I am still very nervous to restart.

I was researching this for my dark spots and found that the cancer concern is mostly linked to oral consumption in high doses in lab tests. For normal skin application, there's no major risk of that, but it can cause bluish skin discoloration if used for too long. Definitely get a doctor's prescription instead of buying OTC.
