Does heat help sciatic nerve pain?

I'm currently suffering from sciatic nerve pain, and it's making daily activities very difficult. I've heard that heat therapy can be beneficial. Does heat help in reducing sciatic nerve pain?

My son had bad sciatic pain last year because of a sports injury. Honestly, a hot water bag helped him relax his tight lower back muscles, but don't use it for too long. If the pain is very sharp, ice might be better first to calm the inflammation down.

I tried everything from mustard oil massage to hot gel packs for my sciatica. Actually, heat works nicely to loosen the stiffness when you wake up in the morning. Just make sure the heating pad isn't too hot, otherwise it can increase the throbbing sensation.

Hey, don't worry too much, this pain can be managed. Heat definitely helps to improve blood flow and soothe the area, but only use it for 15-20 minutes at a time. If it starts hurting more after heating, stop immediately and give your back some rest.

My electric heating blanket and I became best friends during my sciatica phase! It really helps to melt the stiffness away, but don't sleep on it or you'll wake up toasted. Use it like a temporary trailer, the real movie is getting a proper diagnosis from a doc.

Haan yaar, heat se thoda relief toh milta hi hai, muscle bilkul free ho jate hain. But heating pad directly skin pe mat lagana na, kapda rakh ke hi apply karna. Aur pain zyada badhe toh seedha doctor ko dikhao.

I was just reading about this on a few medical forums yesterday. Apparently, heat is great for chronic stiffness because it relaxes the muscles around the nerve. But some people say if it's a fresh flare-up, cold packs are actually better first.

Agree with others here. A warm shower helped me way more than dry heat pads when my lower back was hurting.

Heat can provide temporary symptomatic relief by dilating blood vessels and relaxing spasms. However, sciatica is often caused by a pinched nerve or disc issue, so self-treating with just heat isn't a permanent solution. Please consult a physiotherapist or doctor for a proper treatment plan.
