Does having a heart attack change your personality?

My uncle recently had a heart attack, and ever since, he seems a bit different, more irritable and withdrawn than before. My family is quite worried. Can having a heart attack actually change a person's personality?

It definitely changed my uncle. He used to be super hot-tempered, but after his mild attack, he suddenly became very quiet and focused on his health. Facing something that scary face-to-face really makes you rethink life.

I panicked so much when my father became very irritable and anxious after his cardiac event, thinking his personality was ruined forever. But my doctor reassured us that post-attack anxiety is very common. With counseling and time, he slowly became his cheerful self again.

I can only share what I observed with my father-in-law. After his bypass, he became much more emotional and started crying during family movies, which he never did before. It seems the shock of the event changes how people process feelings.

A massive health shock can definitely cause mood swings, similar to how hormonal changes affect behavior. It is very important to get regular blood work and checkups done post-recovery. Sometimes underlying stress or medication side effects can look like a personality shift.

I think going through a life-threatening event naturally makes people more cautious, which family members might mistake as a personality change. It's a very delicate phase. Just be supportive and give them space to heal mentally as well as physically.
