Does gabapentin make you sleep?

Lately, I find myself awake for hours in the middle of the night, and it's affecting my energy levels the next day. I've heard some people say that medicines like gabapentin can make you feel drowsy. Does it commonly have a sedative effect that could help with sleep?

Drowsiness and fatigue are well-documented side effects of gabapentin. However, using it specifically as a sleeping aid is not recommended unless prescribed by your physician for an underlying neuropathic condition.

It doesn't just make you sleep, it practically knocks you out like a light switch! The first week I took it, I felt like a zombie for half the next day. Great for sleep, not so great for morning meetings.

Yes, it causes strong drowsiness. Better to take it right before bedtime so you don't feel dizzy during the day.

I just finished a month-long course of this for a nerve injury. Yes, it made me very sleepy initially, but that heavy feeling wears off after a few days as your body gets used to the drug.

When I was treated at Fortis, my neurologist clearly warned me about the sedative effects of this drug. You should ask your doctor clearly about the best timing to take it so it doesn't disrupt your daily work.

I totally get it, struggling to sleep or feeling excessively drowsy from meds can be so frustrating. Please give your body some time to adapt, and definitely discuss this sleepiness with your doctor.
