Does gabapentin help you sleep?

A lot of trouble sleeping peacefully lately, tossing and turning all night. My cousin takes gabapentin for her nerve pain, and she mentioned it also helps her get a good night's rest. Is it generally used to improve sleep quality?

While drowsiness is a very common side effect of gabapentin, it is not clinically indicated as a primary sleep medication. Using it solely for sleep without a doctor's prescription is not advisable. Please consult a sleep specialist.

It did make me feel drowsy, but as someone with blood pressure issues, I prefer natural sleep. Gentle evening walks and avoiding caffeine after 4 PM worked wonders for me without needing prescription pills.

My physician explained that gabapentin increases slow-wave sleep and sleep efficiency, which is why patients often feel very rested. However, she emphasized that it should only be used if sleep issues are linked to chronic nerve pain.

Yes, it definitely has a calming effect that can help you drift off easily! Just make sure you discuss it with your doctor first so you take the right dose at night. Sweet dreams!

Beta, taking strong medicines just to sleep is not good for the body in the long run. Try drinking a warm cup of milk with a pinch of nutmeg before bed, it relaxes the nerves naturally and safely.
