Does food go to the liver?

My science teacher in school once mentioned something about how our food gets processed. I was wondering, does all the food we eat directly go to the liver, or does it go to other places first?

The food we eat goes to the stomach first, but the absorbed nutrients definitely travel to the liver via the bloodstream. This is why a clean, oil-free vegetarian diet is so crucial to avoid fatty liver issues. Avoid heavy fried foods to keep your liver happy.

To be precise, the physical food doesn't enter the liver, but the portal vein carries all the digested nutrients from the stomach and intestines straight to the liver. My gastroenterologist explained this when I was diagnosed with a fatty liver. The liver basically processes and detoxifies everything before it goes to the heart.

My son was asking the same thing for his science project! Food goes to the stomach, but the energy and nutrients are sent to the liver for filtering. It is a beautiful way our body protects us, so we must feed our kids healthy home meals.

I used to worry so much that eating spicy food would directly burn my liver! But actually, the stomach handles the physical food and only the absorbed elements reach the liver. Knowing this really helped calm my health anxiety.

Since I have PCOS, I have to be very careful with insulin resistance, which is heavily connected to how the liver processes glucose from our food. Yes, the nutrients go directly to the liver to be sorted. It is always wise to eat low-GI foods to prevent liver overload.
