Does food digest while you sleep?

I often eat dinner quite late because of my work schedule, and then go to bed soon after. Sometimes I wonder if my food actually gets digested properly when I'm sleeping, or if the process slows down significantly. How does digestion work overnight?

Yes, food definitely digests while you sleep, but the process is much slower. I used to eat heavy dinners right before bed and would wake up with terrible acidity and bloating. Now I maintain a 3-hour gap before sleeping, and my gut feels so much better.

Our digestive system keeps working even when we sleep, though our metabolism slows down. Eating heavy or oily meals late at night can cause reflux because gravity isn't helping keep the acid down. Stick to lighter dinners for a peaceful sleep.

I totally get it, sometimes late-night cravings are hard to resist and then you worry about your sleep quality. Your body still processes the food, but it has to work extra hard, which might disturb your deep sleep. Try having a light soup if you feel hungry late.

Our bodies are beautiful machines that continue their work of nourishing us even while we rest. To help this natural process, it is best to eat early, light meals. Let your body focus on deep healing during sleep rather than heavy digestion.

I used to panic thinking eating late would rot the food in my stomach overnight! But my doctor laughed and assured me the body is designed to digest food 24/7. While early dinners are healthier, sleeping won't stop your digestion at all.
