Does fasting prevent diabetes?

My parents both have diabetes, so I'm very conscious about preventing it myself. I've heard that practicing regular fasting might help in preventing the onset of diabetes. Is this true, can fasting really help prevent it?

I have PCOS and insulin resistance, so I also looked into intermittent fasting. While it helps some people manage insulin levels, it is not a guaranteed shield against diabetes and can sometimes stress the hormones. It is best to consult an endocrinologist first.

Fasting alone cannot prevent diabetes if your overall diet and genetics are not favorable. Please get a regular HbA1c test done to check your levels.

I used to check my blood sugar three times a day out of pure health anxiety, so I get why you are looking for ways to prevent it. Fasting seems like an easy fix, but the stress of starving can also raise cortisol and blood sugar! Please talk to a doctor to find a calm, sustainable plan.

Honestly, with a 10-hour desk job, long fasts are not practical and usually lead to overeating later. Instead of fasting, just stop ordering sweet chai and junk food at the office. Try to get a basic health checkup done every 6 months to stay on top of your numbers.

I tried fasting to avoid getting diabetes, but my blood sugar levels fluctuated wildly and I fainted once. When I finally went to the doctor, I found out my pancreas was already struggling and I needed proper medication. Don't self-treat, see a doctor.

Agree with everyone here. Fasting isn't a magic cure; weight management, less carbs, and regular exercise are what actually prevent diabetes.
