Does drinking tea give you kidney stones?

My whole family drinks a lot of tea throughout the day. My sister-in-law recently developed kidney stones, and now I'm wondering if our tea habit could be the cause. Can drinking tea regularly lead to kidney stones?

I love drinking lemon tea every evening, so this makes me a bit nervous. Does adding lemon to the tea help reduce the stone risk, or should I stop drinking it altogether? Any gentle advice would be really nice.

Haan na, I also heard this from my neighbor. Black tea contains high oxalates which can cause stones if we drink too much of it. Better to stick to normal milk chai or green tea in moderation, ho na?

Beta, excess of anything is bad for health. Tea has warm properties and oxalates, so drinking too much will strain the kidneys. Drink lots of pure water and occasionally barley water (jau ka paani) to keep your kidneys naturally clean.

I used to drink 5-6 cups of strong black tea daily at my desk and ignored the constant dull backache. It turned out to be a large kidney stone that needed a procedure. Please get a regular checkup if you feel any persistent lower back pain.

Honestly, you don't need to panic and stop tea completely. Just limit it to 1 or 2 small cups a day and avoid drinking it on an empty stomach. Keeping basic habits like drinking 3 liters of normal water is the best simple solution.

As someone who had a 6mm oxalate stone, I can tell you that black tea is definitely high in oxalates. However, my urologist said adding a splash of milk binds the oxalates in your digestive tract before they reach the kidneys. So switch to milk tea and drink lots of water.
