Does diabetes make your pee smell?
I've been noticing a strange, slightly sweet smell in my urine lately, which is quite unusual. I know that can sometimes be a sign of diabetes. Is it true that diabetes changes the smell of your pee?

Yes, high sugar levels can make your urine smell sweet or fruity, or strong if there's an infection.
I had a sweet, fruity smell in my urine before I got diagnosed with Type 2. My tip is to drink at least 3 liters of water daily to dilute it, but more importantly, get your HbA1c checked immediately.
I know how worrying this can be. I used to drink barley water to clean out my bladder, but if your sugar is high, only controlling the diabetes with proper medical help will stop the smell.
In my 30 years with diabetes, I've noticed the smell changes when sugars are high or if a UTI is starting. Don't worry, just monitor your daily fasting glucose and keep your doctor informed.
A strong or foul smell in urine can also mean ketones are present, which is a medical emergency, or a severe UTI. Please get a urine routine analysis done immediately to find the exact reason.
Oh absolutely, if I cheat and eat too many sweets on a weekend, my urine smells distinctly sweet the next morning. It's a clear warning from the body to stop cheating on the diet!
