Does diabetes cause itchy feet?

Just got diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few months back, and I'm still adjusting. Now I'm noticing my feet are getting really itchy, sometimes it's unbearable. Is this a common thing with diabetes?

Yes, high sugar drains moisture from the body, making the feet very dry and itchy. A simple workable solution is to wash your feet with mild soap and apply a good amount of Vaseline or coconut oil before sleeping. Also, wear soft cotton socks.

I just went through this last month! My feet were itching like crazy, especially during the night, and it turned out my fasting sugar had jumped to 180. Once I got back on my diet and started my walks, the itching stopped completely.

Do not just apply random home remedies you read online for itchy feet. In diabetes, itching can be a sign of poor blood circulation or early nerve damage. Please get your HbA1c checked and consult your doctor to know the exact cause.

I was researching this because my mom has diabetes and has been complaining of itchy soles. Apparently, high blood glucose levels can lead to dry skin and poor circulation, which directly causes itching. It seems to be a very common issue among diabetics.

Please take this symptom seriously and see your doctor. I ignored the itching in my feet thinking it was just dry skin, but it was actually the beginning of diabetic neuropathy. Neglecting it can lead to dangerous infections or numbness, so get it checked.

My dad has Type 2 diabetes and his feet get super itchy when his sugar spikes after eating sweets. He literally just sits and scratches them while watching TV. He has to use a heavy medicated cream his doc prescribed to get some relief.

According to my doctor, chronic hyperglycemia leads to poor blood flow and can trigger yeast or fungal infections on the feet, which cause intense itching. He advised me to keep my feet absolutely dry, check them daily for cuts, and maintain strict glycemic control.
