Does dementia cause pain in legs?

My mother has been diagnosed with dementia, and lately she's also been complaining a lot about pain in her legs, especially at night. We're trying to figure out if this is related to her dementia or if it's a separate issue. Can dementia cause pain in the legs?

Don't stress too much, we can figure this out. Dementia itself doesn't directly cause physical leg pain, but sometimes patients forget to move, get stiff, or have trouble explaining that their legs are cramping. Try gently massaging their legs or helping them do very light walks inside the house to keep the blood flowing.

In my experience with health issues, leg pain is often related to poor circulation or nerve issues, which can also happen to older folks with dementia. I have high blood pressure, and if I don't walk regularly, my legs start aching terribly. Please get their routine blood work and BP checked, as managing general health makes a big difference.

When my grandmother had this, she couldn't clearly express where the pain was, and we wasted a lot of time guessing. Leg pain could be from simple dehydration, arthritis, or even a wrong sitting posture. Save yourself the stress and schedule an appointment with a neurologist or a general physician this weekend itself to get an accurate diagnosis.

It is so scary when a loved one is going through this and you cannot understand their pain, I completely feel for you. Sometimes, anxiety in dementia patients manifests as physical tension, making their legs feel tight or sore. Just sitting with them, holding their hand, and talking calmly can sometimes help relax their muscles and ease the distress.

Many times, leg pain in older people is simply due to nutritional deficiencies like low Vitamin D or B12, which is very common in vegetarian diets. Since dementia patients often have erratic eating habits, they might not be getting enough nutrients. You can try giving them simple milk with turmeric or banana slices to help with muscle cramps, but do consult a doctor for proper supplements.
