Does crohn's disease cause weight gain?

Most people associate Crohn's disease with weight loss, but I've actually noticed I'm gaining weight since my diagnosis, especially around my mid-section. Is it possible for Crohn's disease to cause weight gain?

Usually, Crohn's causes weight loss, but weight gain can happen, especially if you are on steroid treatments like prednisone. Having thyroid issues myself, I know how frustrating sudden weight changes are. Make sure to get your levels checked and talk to your doctor regularly.

Crohn's itself typically causes weight loss due to poor absorption, but if you're gaining weight, it's highly likely a side effect of the steroids or your body finally recovering. Don't guess, just discuss your medication list with your gastroenterologist.

While weight loss is the classic symptom of Crohn's, some patients do experience weight gain, often due to water retention from medications or dietary changes during remission. Since everyone's body reacts differently, consulting your specialist is the safest way to address this.

My doctor explained that Crohn's-associated weight gain is almost always linked to prescription corticosteroids which increase appetite and fluid retention. Once the disease goes into remission and steroids are tapered, the weight usually stabilizes. Always discuss dose adjustments with your practitioner.
