In our family, we have always used virgin coconut oil to soothe dry and scaly skin. It is very safe and helps soften the thick patches of psoriasis. However, it is a chronic condition, so you must also continue the treatments prescribed by your skin doctor.
My friend has psoriasis on her elbows and she always carries a small bottle of coconut oil to apply whenever it gets too dry and itchy. It really helps calm the scaling and redness. But she also uses her medicated coal tar creams when she has a major flare-up.
Honestly, keeping up with skin routines when you are exhausted is so hard, but coconut oil is the easiest thing to just slather on before bed. It doesn't cure psoriasis, but at least it stops the constant, sleep-ruining itch so I can get some rest!
Coconut oil is awesome for external hydration on dry patches, but psoriasis is an autoimmune issue. You also need to look at your gut health, manage stress with regular exercise, and eat clean, anti-inflammatory foods. It all works together.
My roommate uses it for her scalp psoriasis and says it helps loosen the flakes before shampooing. It's a super cheap and easy hack, especially on a student budget. Just make sure to wash it out well or your hair looks really greasy.
