Does closing your eyes count as sleep?

Often try to take short breaks during my studies and just close my eyes for a while to relax. I was wondering if simply closing your eyes, without actually falling into deep sleep, provides any real restorative benefits. Does it count as proper rest for the brain?

Scientifically, just closing your eyes does not count as actual sleep because your brain waves don't enter the restorative stages. However, when you are swamped with work, a 10-minute 'quiet wakefulness' break with eyes closed still helps lower your heart rate and reduces mental fatigue.

In my younger days, I used to think resting with my eyes closed during afternoon breaks was useless. But over the years, I realized that resting your eyes and silencing your mind for 20 minutes actually recharges your batteries. It isn't deep REM sleep, but it gives your brain a very necessary break.

While closing your eyes is good for resting, true sleep is needed for your digestive system and hormones to regulate properly. Eating a light, warm dinner of khichdi at least two hours before bed will help you get actual deep sleep rather than just lying awake with closed eyes.

If you are finding it hard to get real sleep and just lie down with eyes shut, don't rush to spend thousands on expensive sleep clinics or sleep studies immediately. Try simple changes like putting your phone away and blacking out your room. Save those expensive clinical test costs for when it is a serious medical issue.

I used to just lie down with my eyes closed for hours, thinking it was enough, but I still felt exhausted. When I got my thyroid panel checked, my TSH was completely off, causing this extreme fatigue and poor sleep quality. If you are struggling to fall into deep sleep, please get your blood checked and consult a doctor.
