Does chocolate milk cause kidney stones?

My son drinks a lot of chocolate milk, and I recently read something online about oxalate-rich foods and kidney stones. I'm getting a little worried. Can regular consumption of chocolate milk increase the risk of kidney stones in children?

I used to drink chocolate milk almost every day after my workouts until I got a mild kidney stone last year. The doctor told me the high oxalate from cocoa combined with calcium can sometimes form stones if you don't drink enough water. Now I just stick to regular milk and lots of water.

I totally get it, chocolate milk is such a comforting drink and it is hard to think it might cause issues. However, if you are prone to stones, the oxalates in chocolate can be a concern. It is always best to enjoy it occasionally rather than daily.

Yes, cocoa is rich in oxalates, which can increase the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones if you drink it frequently without proper hydration.

Actually yaar, it is a bit of a double-edged sword. The calcium in milk actually binds with the oxalates in chocolate in your stomach, which can sometimes prevent stones from forming in the kidneys. But if you have a history of stones, better to be safe and check with your doc.

Processed chocolate drinks contain heavy sugars and preservatives which can upset the balance of our bodily fluids. To keep your kidneys clean, focus on fresh, pure water and natural coconut water. Nature's drinks are always best for keeping the body toxin-free.

For vegetarians, we must be careful about dietary oxalates from sources like chocolate, spinach, and tea. Chocolate milk does contain these oxalates, but when consumed in moderation alongside a high-fluid diet, the risk is quite low. Balance is key.

I just recovered from a painful kidney stone episode last month. My dietitian strictly limited my intake of cocoa-based drinks because of their high oxalate content. If you are already prone to stones, I would suggest replacing chocolate milk with plain milk or buttermilk.
