Does chocolate help you sleep?

I have trouble falling asleep sometimes, and I often crave something sweet before bed. My friend told me that a small piece of chocolate might actually help you sleep better. Is there any truth to this, or is it more likely to keep me awake?

In my seventy years, I have found that eating anything heavy or sweet before bed only disturbs the stomach and ruins sleep. Chocolate actually contains caffeine and other stimulants which might keep you awake. A warm glass of milk is much better for a peaceful night.

According to my sleep tracker data, my deep sleep quality drops significantly whenever I eat chocolate close to bedtime. This is because cocoa contains caffeine and theobromine, which are natural stimulants. Try to avoid chocolate at least 4 to 6 hours before sleeping.

I totally get it, sometimes we just want a sweet comfort snack late at night to wind down. But honestly, chocolate might do the opposite because of the hidden caffeine in it. Maybe try some chamomile tea instead for a cozy, relaxing bedtime routine.

As someone who regularly stares at the ceiling at 3 AM, eating chocolate before bed is a terrible idea for me. The sugar rush combined with the caffeine keeps my brain buzzing. If you want to actually sleep, stay far away from the chocolate stash at night.

Eating stimulating foods late in the evening disturbs the 'sattva' or calmness of the mind. Chocolate excites the nervous system rather than calming it down. Practicing light bhramari pranayama before sleep will give you far better rest than any sweet treat.
