I am also dealing with some red, itchy patches on my hands and was thinking to buy calamine today. But is it safe to use on broken skin? My mother told me it might burn, so I am a bit scared to try it without asking.
I have had eczema for 10 years and let me tell you, calamine is not the solution. It has zinc oxide which dries the skin, and dry skin makes eczema flare up like crazy. Stick to a thick ceramide-based cream and apply it immediately after your bath when the skin is still damp. That is what actually works.
Honestly, I was searching about this last week because my cousin has really bad dry patches. From what I read, it might temporarily cool the itch but it actually dries out the skin more if you use it too much. Isn't eczema already super dry? Better to stick to heavy moisturizers designed for dry skin.
When my skin first flared up, I freaked out and applied calamine all over, thinking it would heal the rash. My skin became so tight and itchy, I almost cried! But then the doctor told me it's totally normal for calamine to dry you out and to use a proper prescription emollient instead. Don't worry, just switch to a gentle moisturizer and you will feel much better.
