Does biotin increase or decrease thyroid levels?

I have been on thyroid medication for years now. I recently started taking biotin for my hair fall. Does biotin increase or decrease thyroid levels, and should I be concerned about it interacting with my medication?

Actually, biotin doesn't change your actual thyroid levels in the body, but it can mess up your lab test reports! My doctor told me that if you take biotin, your TSH might look lower than it actually is on paper. So it's best to stop it a few days before your blood test.

I am no expert so I won't give medical advice, but I can share what happened to me. I was taking high-dose biotin for hair thinning and my thyroid report came back completely normal when it shouldn't have. Once I stopped biotin for a week and re-tested, my levels were actually quite high. It really interferes with the lab machines.

I agree with what others are saying about the lab reports. Just make sure to tell your laboratory technician beforehand that you are taking biotin.

It won't affect your thyroid health directly, don't worry! But it definitely plays hide and seek with the blood test results. Just stop the supplement 3-5 days before going to the path lab and you will get the correct readings. 😊

Why create confusion in the mind? The simplest solution is to write down your biotin dosage and show it to your family doctor. Ask them exactly how many days before the blood draw you need to pause it so that your thyroid prescription stays correct.

Let's be precise here. Biotin does not change your actual thyroid hormone production in any way. It only interferes with the chemical assays used in lab testing, leading to false high or low reports. Just skip biotin for a week before your next thyroid profile test, simple as that.

Please don't worry too much about this. It doesn't harm your thyroid gland. Just talk to your lab and they will tell you when to pause your supplement before the test.
