Does biotin affect thyroid?

I have hypothyroidism and take medication daily. Recently, my hair has been falling a lot, and a friend suggested biotin supplements. Will taking biotin affect my thyroid levels or my medication's effectiveness?

There is a lot of misinformation online about biotin damaging the thyroid. It does not actually affect your thyroid gland or its hormone production. It only interferes with the chemical testing process in the laboratory, making your reports look abnormal. Always verify this with your endocrinologist instead of reading scary blogs.

In our days, we ate walnuts and coconut for healthy hair instead of these high-dose biotin capsules. These modern supplements are very strong and can confuse your blood test reports. If you are taking them, please stop a few days before your doctor checkup and try to eat simple, natural foods for your hair.

Don't worry too much, biotin doesn't cause any thyroid disease. It just messes with how the lab machines read your blood sample, which can show false hyperthyroidism. Just tell your doctor about the supplement, stop taking it for 3 to 5 days before your test, and your reports will be perfectly fine.

Let's be clear: biotin doesn't alter your actual thyroid function, but it absolutely ruins the accuracy of your blood tests. The FDA has already issued warnings about this. If you are getting a thyroid panel done, stop your biotin at least a week before to avoid getting wrong results.

Yeah bro, it definitely does. I was taking biotin for beard growth and my thyroid test came back completely crazy. My doc got suspicious and asked if I was on any hair supplements. He told me to stop it for 4 days and get tested again, and my levels were totally normal.

I started biotin because my hair was falling from eating too much oily junk food outside! But then I found out it can make your thyroid reports look super weird. I decided it's better to just eat boiled eggs and almonds for biotin naturally rather than taking these heavy pills that confuse the labs.

Omg, I had no idea about this! I've been popping biotin gummies for a month because of college stress hair fall. I have my health checkup next week, so I'm definitely going to stop taking them right away. Thanks for the heads up guys!

I got my thyroid test done yesterday and the T3 levels look very strange. I just realized my hair multivitamin has biotin in it. Has anyone else faced false thyroid reports because of this? I am feeling so anxious waiting for my doctor's appointment tomorrow.

Please be very careful. My sister's thyroid dose was wrongly increased by a doctor who didn't realize her biotin supplement was causing false lab readings. She suffered from severe palpitations because of the high dose. Always make sure your endocrinologist knows every single pill you are taking.

Biotin is a common B-vitamin in many multi-vitamins and pre-workouts. While it doesn't affect your physical training or thyroid performance, it does screw up your lab values. If you are tracking your health markers regularly like I do, make sure to cut out biotin a week before your blood draw.
