Does bcbs cover skin removal after weight loss?

After losing a lot of weight, I now have significant excess skin that causes discomfort and skin issues. I'm considering skin removal surgery but concerned about the cost. I have BCBS insurance, so I wanted to ask if they typically cover skin removal procedures after major weight loss.

Losing so much weight is a massive achievement. I hope your insurance supports you in this next step of your journey.

I had minor surgery last year and faced severe healing issues. Please ensure you go to a highly experienced plastic surgeon at a proper hospital and discuss the risks of skin removal surgery clearly before deciding.

Listen, they don't cover it for cosmetic beauty. If the loose skin is causing you physical pain or back issues, then only BCBS will pay. Go to your doctor, get the medical files documented properly, and then file the claim.

At my age, gravity does its job anyway, but loose skin after weight loss is a whole different level! Generally, BCBS will only cover it if you have severe rashes or infections under the skin folds. Otherwise, they just call it cosmetic and send the bill to you.

I understand how stressful it is to face the mirror after working so hard to lose weight, and then worrying about the huge cost of skin removal. It is completely valid to feel anxious about the financial side of your healing. Take it one step at a time.

Ho na, it is so difficult to get approvals for these surgeries. They want proof of skin infections and photographs also sometimes. You must ask your doctor to write a very detailed letter showing it is a medical necessity.
