Does autoimmune disease cause weight gain?

My doctor suspects I might have an autoimmune condition, and I've noticed I've been gaining weight without changing my diet much. Can an autoimmune disease actually cause weight gain, or is it unrelated?

Any sudden weight change when you have an autoimmune condition should be checked by your physician immediately. It could be related to thyroid issues or medication side effects. It is always safer to get regular blood tests done than to assume.

My metabolism has been on a permanent vacation ever since my autoimmune symptoms started! Between the joint pains and the weird weight fluctuations, keeping fit feels like a full-time job. But we just have to laugh it off and keep walking every day.

I ignored my sudden weight gain thinking it was just lack of exercise, but it turned out to be severe fluid retention from an autoimmune flare-up. Please consult your specialist to check if your kidneys or thyroid are being affected.

My endocrinologist explained that chronic inflammation from autoimmune diseases can elevate cortisol levels, which naturally leads to stubborn weight gain, especially around the midsection. They advised focusing on anti-inflammatory foods and gentle movement rather than heavy workouts.

It is incredibly frustrating when you watch what you eat and still gain weight because of an illness. I have cried so many times looking at the scale. Just know that it is not your fault and your body is fighting a hard internal battle right now.

I constantly worry about every small change in my body, and weight gain is definitely scary when you have an autoimmune issue. Could it be water weight or maybe a side effect of steroids? Try tracking your daily symptoms so you can show them to your doctor.

I totally get it, dealing with weight issues on top of chronic pain is physically and mentally exhausting. Please be gentle with yourself. Your body needs rest and proper medical care right now, not the stress of extreme dieting.

With a busy work schedule, managing autoimmune weight gain is tough. I rely on simple meal prep and brief desk stretches to keep active. Realistically, you have to prioritize regular doctor visits to manage the root cause rather than trying quick weight-loss tricks.

Yes, I struggled with sudden weight gain when my autoimmune condition flared up last year. Once my doctors adjusted my treatment and the inflammation went down, my weight slowly returned to normal over six months. Hang in there, it gets better.

In autoimmune cases, inflammation and medications like steroids are often the culprits behind weight changes. While I don't know your specific diagnosis, keeping a journal of your meals and symptoms helps when discussing options with your medical team.
