Does amoxicillin help with tooth pain?

I have a terrible toothache and the dentist prescribed Amoxicillin. I'm hoping it will help with the pain, but I'm not sure if antibiotics are supposed to do that. Does Amoxicillin actually help with tooth pain?

Amoxicillin won't stop tooth pain directly like a painkiller does. It only kills the bacteria if there is an active infection or abscess. Keep your nutrition clean and see a dentist to fix the root cause.

Actually yaar, amoxicillin is for the infection, not the pain itself. For pain, you will need a proper painkiller which the dentist usually gives. Don't just pop antibiotics on your own.

I was just reading up on dental abscesses yesterday. Amoxicillin is commonly prescribed by dentists to clear up any bacterial infection inside the gums, but it takes 24-48 hours to show effect on the swelling.

I have a really bad toothache since last night and we have some amoxicillin at home. Should I wait to see a dentist first or can I just take one tablet now to see if it helps?

In my experience, whenever I had a severe tooth infection, the dentist always gave amoxicillin to dry up the swelling before doing any dental work. It works well, but only when prescribed for the right issue.

Beta, tooth pain can be very troublesome. Press a clove or apply a little clove oil on the painful tooth for quick relief, but do not start antibiotic courses like amoxicillin without a dentist's advice.
