Does a liver transplant require a whole liver?

My cousin needs a liver transplant, and our family is looking into donation options. Do they always need an entire liver for the transplant, or can a partial liver from a living donor be used successfully? We want to understand all possibilities.

My neighbor's son donated just a part of his liver to his father, and both are healthy now. The liver has a natural power to heal and grow itself, which is a blessing. But such major things can only be decided by top doctors, so please consult a specialist team.

No, it doesn't always need a whole liver. If a living relative is donating, they only transplant a portion of their liver, and it actually grows back to normal size in both people over time. It is a brilliant medical process but financially and emotionally demanding, so plan well with a good hospital.

Actually, a partial liver from a living donor is enough because the liver can regenerate itself. My uncle had this done successfully.

I didn't know that only a part of the liver can be used for transplant, that sounds so reassuring. Does the donor also recover fully after giving a part of their liver? I am trying to understand how this works for a family member.

Doctors can use just a segment of a liver from a living donor because of its amazing ability to regenerate. It's a huge operation, so keeping BP and overall health under control before surgery is very critical. Always follow the medical team's guidelines closely.
