Does a kidney regenerate itself?

My uncle had some kidney damage due to diabetes, and it made me wonder about the human body. Can a kidney actually regenerate itself if it gets damaged, like the liver can to some extent, or is kidney damage usually permanent?

I totally understand why you are asking this, worrying about kidney health can make you lose sleep. While the kidney can repair minor cellular damage, it cannot fully grow back or regenerate if there is major scarring. Please consult a doctor to get accurate details and ease your mind.

Actually, unlike the liver, kidneys cannot regenerate new nephrons once they are fully damaged. They can only heal minor injuries on a cellular level. It is very important to protect your remaining kidney function with a healthy lifestyle.

Any kidney issue must be monitored carefully. If there is chronic damage, it is usually irreversible, so you must get regular kidney function tests done. Please show your reports to a nephrologist for proper advice.

My uncle went through kidney issues, and the doctors explained that keeping blood pressure and sugar in check is the only way to prevent further damage. It doesn't regenerate, but you can live a very healthy life by managing it well.

I got some slightly elevated creatinine reports and I am so scared. Can the kidneys recover from this on their own if I change my diet? Has anyone else managed to bring their levels back to normal?

I wish our kidneys could regenerate like a lizard's tail, but unfortunately, they don't! Once damaged, we just have to protect whatever is left. Drink enough water and cut down on extra salt, that's the best we can do.

As someone who has managed kidney issues, I can tell you there is no magic regeneration. The key is to stop further decline by strictly following a low-sodium diet and avoiding self-medication. Keep checking your EGFR regularly.

Kidneys don't actually grow back like the liver, yaar. Once the damage is done, it's mostly permanent, so we have to be super careful with painkillers and high salt foods. Definitely get a doctor's opinion.
