Does a fever make you feel hot or cold?

Whenever I have a fever, I feel so cold and shivery, even when I'm under blankets. But then my husband touches me and says I'm burning up. So, does a fever actually make you feel hot or cold?

I totally get it, that weird feeling of shivering under three blankets while your skin is literally burning hot is so confusing. It happens because your brain shifts your internal thermostat higher, making you feel freezing cold until your body temperature rises to match it. It is an unpleasant but very common cycle.

My family physician explained that during a fever, the hypothalamus resets our body's set-point temperature. Because our actual temperature is lower than this new setting, we feel cold and shiver to generate heat. Once the set-point goes back to normal, we feel hot and sweat to release that extra heat.

Yes, it is very common to feel both cold and hot during a fever. Drink some warm water, rest well under a light blanket, and you will feel better soon.

It actually makes you feel both, just at different stages. When the fever is rising, you feel extremely cold and get chills because your body is trying to heat up. Once the fever peaks or starts to break, that is when you feel hot and start sweating heavily.

Oh, the chills are the absolute worst part of having a fever! I always start worrying that it is something dangerous when my teeth start chattering, but it is actually just a normal physiological response. Hang in there, try to stay calm, and keep checking your temperature.

When my kids get a fever, they always cry that they are freezing, even though their skin feels like fire to me. I learned not to wrap them in thick blankets because that traps the heat inside and raises the fever more. A light sheet is much safer and more comfortable.

Think of it this way: when the fever is starting, you get chills because the body is trying to reach a higher temperature. Once the medicine works and the fever breaks, the sweating starts to cool you down. Just wear comfortable clothes and don't bundle up too heavily, let your skin breathe.

I just recovered from a viral fever last week and went through this exact thing. At night, I was shivering under a heavy rajai, and by morning, I woke up completely drenched in sweat. It is just the standard way our body deals with a temperature spike.

Ah, the classic 'fan on or fan off' debate that we play with ourselves during a fever! Honestly, my body can't decide if it is in Kashmir or Chennai when I get a fever. First you shiver like crazy, and then suddenly you are sweating through your t-shirt—nature's way of keeping us confused.

I am shivering so much right now even though my husband says my forehead is very hot to touch. Is it normal to feel so freezing cold when your actual body temperature is high? I always get super anxious when the chills start.
