Does a cool rag help fever?

My little girl has a fever, and she's very cranky. I'm trying to make her comfortable and bring down her temperature. Does a cool rag on her forehead actually help with a fever, or is it just an old remedy that doesn't really work?

It can help bring down the skin temperature and make the patient feel more comfortable. However, a fever is your body's response to an infection, so please monitor it closely. If the temperature is very high or doesn't resolve, get it checked by a doctor immediately.

I had a bad viral fever last week and a cool damp cloth was a lifesaver. It didn't cure my fever, but it really helped soothe the burning headache so I could sleep. Use normal tap water, not ice water, as that can make you shiver.

Hey, don't stress too much! Just wet a clean small towel with normal water and put it on your forehead. It is a very safe and simple way to feel better while the medicines do their job. Rest well, okay?

Yes, it helps. From my experience with my family, placing the cool cloth on the back of the neck and underarms is actually more effective than just the forehead, as major blood vessels pass through there. Keep changing the cloth as it absorbs body heat.

It is a reliable physical method to manage high temperatures and soothe discomfort. However, since it only addresses the symptom and not the cause, you should consult a doctor if the fever persists beyond a couple of days.
