Do you need more sleep as you get older?

My grandmother, who is 80, feels tired all the time even though she sleeps a lot. She says that as you get older, you need more sleep. Is it really true that older people need more sleep, or is her fatigue due to something else?

Don't fall for random online advice saying older people only need 5 hours of sleep. The sleep requirement doesn't decrease, but health issues often make it harder to sleep. It is best to verify any sudden changes in your sleep patterns with a qualified doctor.

As we get older, sleep quality often drops, especially if you have fluctuating blood sugar levels. High sugar can make you run to the bathroom all night, disrupting rest. Make sure your diet is in check and get a professional opinion if you feel tired all day.

Hormonal issues like PCOS or thyroid can make you feel like you need endless sleep, which gets more noticeable as we age. It's really hard to tell what is normal aging and what is hormonal. It might be a good idea to get a full blood panel done to be safe.

I went through a phase of extreme fatigue recently and assumed I just needed more sleep as I got older. But my doctor found my vitamin D and B12 were dangerously low. Once I fixed that, my normal 7 hours of sleep became totally enough again.

I swear I need about 12 hours of sleep now just to survive my back ache, but my body wakes me up at 6 AM anyway! Actually, we need the same 7-8 hours, but our bodies just love to play games with us as we age. Go see a doc if you're permanently exhausted.

I know how worrying it is when you suddenly feel tired all the time and wonder if something is wrong. The standard sleep requirement is still 7-8 hours even for older adults. Please don't stress, but do consult a doctor to put your mind at ease.

My dad sleeps way less than me now, but he says he feels totally fine. I think older people don't need more sleep, their bodies just get used to waking up early. But if you are feeling super tired, definitely get it checked out.
