Do you need less sleep when you get older?

My mother-in-law is nearing 70, and she barely sleeps for 5-6 hours a night, while I need at least 8. She insists it's because she's older and doesn't need as much sleep. Is it common for people to need less sleep when they get older?

It's a common misconception that older folks don't need sleep. The truth is they just have trouble staying asleep due to aches or bathroom trips. Don't compromise on your 7 hours, set a strict bedtime and stick to it.

The biological need for sleep stays around 7-8 hours, but our activity levels often drop as we age. If you stay physically active with daily exercise or walks, your body will naturally crave that recovery sleep. Keep moving and your sleep quality will improve.

I used to think my changing sleep cycle was just aging, but it was actually a thyroid imbalance causing insomnia and fatigue. Please don't ignore poor sleep as a normal part of getting older. Get a full blood panel and thyroid test done to be safe.

You still need proper rest, but digestion issues can often disrupt sleep in older years. Eating a light, vegetarian dinner at least 3 hours before bed can prevent acid reflux and help you sleep longer. Avoid heavy tea or coffee in the evenings.

Looking back, I realize my sleep patterns did change, but the need for rest never goes away. I might sleep 6 hours at night now, but a quick 30-minute afternoon nap keeps me fresh. Listen to your body and rest whenever it asks for it.
