Do you have to fast for thyroid bloodwork?

My family doctor told me to get some thyroid bloodwork done next week. I just wanted to ask if I need to stop eating beforehand, or can I eat normally?

I completely panicked last month because I drank a cup of coffee before my thyroid test and thought I ruined the whole report. But my doctor laughed and said it’s fine, though fasting is preferred for standard results. Don't worry at all, just tell your lab technician if you ate something.

Hello, I have to get my first thyroid test next week and I am a bit confused. Is it okay if I drink plain water in the morning before going to the clinic, or do we have to fast completely without even water? I would be really grateful if anyone could guide me on this.

Listen, there is no need to get anxious about this. Just schedule the test for early morning, sleep well tonight, and go without having breakfast. If you feel dizzy, carry a small apple or juice box with you to have immediately after the blood is taken. Take care of yourself.

For thyroid tests, yes, go empty stomach and do not take your medicine beforehand. While you manage your medication, eating soaked walnuts and doing light neck exercises can also support thyroid health. But please make sure you consult your doctor regularly and don't change your doses on your own.

Please don't worry. It is usually best to do it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. It makes the results much more accurate for your doctor to check.

Haan, fasting is better na. Subah bina kuch khaye piye chale jao, test jaldi ho jata hai. If you eat breakfast, the TSH levels can fluctuate a bit, so risk kyu lena. Fasting is the safest option for a proper report.

I have BP issues and thyroid both, so I get regular checkups. My doctor always insists on 8 to 10 hours of overnight fasting for thyroid labs. Keeping a check on your salt intake and doing 30 minutes of daily walking along with these regular tests really helps keep everything in control.
