Do you have to fast for a thyroid panel?

My general physician suggested a thyroid panel because of my ongoing fatigue and some weight gain. I'm wondering if I need to fast before this blood test.

See, if you want accurate reports, go fasting early morning. Yes, some labs say it is not necessary, but eating food can temporarily fluctuate your hormone levels. Don't take your thyroid medicine before the test either.

At Max Hospital, my endocrinologist specifically advised me to do the thyroid panel empty stomach in the morning. Since protocols can vary slightly depending on what exact parameters are being tested, it is best to ask your doctor clearly.

I log my lab results on my health tracker, and I've noticed my TSH levels are more consistent when I do the test fasting at 8 AM. Eating can cause minor dips in TSH, so empty stomach is highly recommended for accurate tracking.

Yes, for a complete thyroid panel (T3, T4, TSH), a 10-hour overnight fast is best. It helps standardize the results. Just have a light dinner the previous night and go to the lab first thing in the morning.

I panicked once because I had a tea before my test, but the doctor said it was fine. However, they do prefer fasting for a cleaner blood sample. Just go empty stomach next time to keep it simple and stress-free.

My doctor explained that while basic TSH doesn't strictly require fasting, the free T3 and T4 levels can be influenced by lipemia (fat in blood) after meals. So, fasting for 8-10 hours is standard clinical advice to avoid any errors.
