Do you have to fast before thyroid blood work?

My doctor has recommended thyroid blood work due to some recent changes I've noticed. I'm wondering if I need to fast before I go to the lab for the test.

I just got my thyroid profile done last week. While some doctors say fasting is not 100% compulsory, doing it empty stomach in the morning gives the most accurate TSH levels. Also, do not take your thyroid medicine before the test.

I completely understand the anxiety of getting blood tests done, I used to worry about doing it wrong too. For thyroid, going fasting early in the morning is generally recommended to keep the baseline clear. Take a deep breath, it is a very simple process.

I usually just skip breakfast and get my thyroid blood work done by 8 AM. The lab technicians told me that eating food can temporarily lower your TSH reading. So yes, better to go empty stomach.

Go peacefully in the morning on an empty stomach for your test. Staying positive and keeping your mind calm during the test is also good for your body. Once the sample is given, you can have your breakfast and start your day.

Look, it is always safer to fast for about 8 to 10 hours before any hormone-related blood work. It avoids any minor fluctuations in the report. Just book an early morning slot, get it over with, and don't take your thyroid pill beforehand.
