Do you cough up phlegm with asthma?

My little boy has been having a lot of wheezing and a wet cough lately, and the doctor is checking for asthma. He often coughs up yellow phlegm. Does asthma typically involve coughing up phlegm, or is that usually from something else?

Oh, absolutely! It feels like my chest is trying to manufacture jelly sometimes. It is just your lungs doing their dramatic reaction to dust or pollen, so don't freak out. Just keep spit cups handy and keep chugging that warm water!

Yes, coughing up phlegm is a classic symptom because asthmatic airways produce excess mucus when inflamed. My doctor explained that this thick mucus can plug the airways, which is why we wheeze. He advised me to monitor if the phlegm changes from clear to dark yellow, which needs immediate attention.

Speaking from what I see daily, yes, phlegm is very common. Just make sure you are not taking random over-the-counter cough syrups as they can sometimes dry out the mucus and make it harder to cough up. Stick to your prescribed inhaler and keep yourself well-hydrated.

Yes, it is quite common to have phlegm with asthma. Please take care of yourself, drink some warm ginger water, and rest as much as you can. I hope you feel better soon.

While phlegm is a regular part of asthma, please do not take it lightly if the cough is increasing. You should definitely get your lungs checked by a specialist to ensure there is no chest infection starting. Safety is always first, so get a doctor's opinion.

Man, my asthma cough kept me awake till 3 AM coughing up phlegm yesterday. Yes, it happens, and it is incredibly annoying when you just want to sleep. Pro-tip: prop your pillows up high so you aren't lying flat, it helps thoda with the chest congestion.

Yes, it happens, but instead of spending thousands on fancy cough syrups that don't work, focus on your basic inhalers which are more cost-effective. You can also get a basic spirometry test done at any government diagnostic lab for a very low cost to check your lung capacity.
