Do you burn more calories when sick without fever?

I've been feeling under the weather for a couple of days, no fever, just a general sick feeling. My mom always says you burn more calories when you're sick. Is that true even if you don't have a fever?

Yes, even without a fever, your immune system is working overtime to fight off the infection, which does consume extra energy. You might not burn as much as you would with a high fever, but your body still needs proper fuel. Keep eating light, nutritious meals like khichdi to help your body recover.

In my experience, when the body is busy healing, its inner energy is diverted entirely to recovery, which is a demanding process for the system even if there is no fever. Practicing deep, conscious breathing can assist this healing process and soothe your nerves. Please rest fully and listen to what your body needs.

My elders always said that a sick body is like a busy house, constantly working inside to clean up. My doctor also confirmed that our metabolism remains elevated during any infection to support the immune defense. Please eat simple, warm home-cooked food and rest well under proper medical guidance.

Honestly, if coughing my lungs out and blowing my nose every five minutes burns extra calories, then I must be a fitness model by now. Fever or no fever, being sick is just exhausting. Don't worry about burning calories, just get some good sleep if your nose actually allows you to breathe!

Actually, any active immune response, like producing white blood cells and repairing tissues, requires metabolic energy, so your calorie burn can be slightly higher than normal baseline even without a fever. Focus on staying hydrated with electrolytes and water rather than worrying about exact calorie counts right now.
