Do they keep you in the hospital for kidney stones?

My father-in-law was just diagnosed with kidney stones and is in a lot of pain. If they decide to remove them, do they usually keep you in the hospital for a few days, or is it an outpatient procedure? I need to make arrangements.

Mostly no, if the stone is small you can manage at home with pain meds and lots of water. But if the pain is severe, you are vomiting, or there is a fever, we definitely admit patients to manage pain and check for infection.

My brother was sent home the same day with some drinking instructions. Do they always require surgery if the stone doesn't pass in a week?

They only admit you if a procedure or IV fluids are needed, which can increase the bill quite a bit. Get a proper ultrasound first to see the stone size, as many small stones pass with cheap oral medicines at home.

My doctor told me that admission is only necessary if the stone is obstructing urine flow or causing unbearable pain. Otherwise, they send you home with a prescription to help dilate the passage naturally.

My roommate had this last month and they just gave him a killer painkiller injection and sent him back to the hostel. He had to drink gallons of water and passed it in a few days.
