Do teething babies sleep more?

My baby, who is 6 months old, has been very sleepy these past few days, much more than usual. His gums look swollen, so I think he might be teething. Is it common for teething babies to sleep more?

Honestly, it is usually the opposite! My niece was so cranky and slept much less because of the gum pain. Sometimes they might sleep more if they are exhausted from crying, but mostly their sleep gets a bit disturbed.

Teething can make them lose their appetite, which might make them a bit weak and sleepy. I used to give my baby cold carrot sticks to chew on under supervision to soothe the gums. Just ensure they are hydrated even if they aren't eating much solid food.

We thought our baby was just sleeping more because of teething, but it turned out to be a ear infection that happened at the same time. Please don't assume sleepiness is just teething. If they seem unusually lethargic or won't wake up for feeds, please consult your doctor immediately.

Actually, my pediatrician told me that teething doesn't directly cause extra sleep. In fact, the discomfort usually disrupts their sleep patterns. If a baby is sleeping excessively or has a high fever, it's likely a viral infection rather than just teething, so watch out for that.

Usually, they sleep less because of the itchy gums, poor babies! 😢 But if they finally dose off after a long crying session, they might sleep deeply. Soft silicone teethers cooled in the fridge work like magic! ❄️

When my son was teething, we went to our regular hospital and the pediatrician clearly told us that teething only causes mild local gum discomfort. Any major change in sleep or high temperature should not be ignored. Please ask your doctor clearly rather than guessing.
