Do nits look like dandruff?

My daughter came home from school scratching her head a lot, and I noticed some small white flakes in her hair. I'm trying to figure out if it's just dandruff or if they could be nits. Do nits look similar to dandruff, and how can I tell the difference?

I was looking this up because my little niece was scratching her head. Apparently, dandruff flakes off easily when you touch them, but nits (lice eggs) are glued tight to the hair shaft and won't move unless you pull them with force.

When my kids were in school, we dealt with this often. Nits are teardrop-shaped and stick firmly to the hair near the scalp, whereas dandruff is white, flaky, and falls off onto your shoulders very easily. Don't worry, a fine-toothed comb will clear them.

Please check carefully under good light. My sister thought it was dandruff and used harsh anti-dandruff shampoos, which severely irritated her scalp and led to an infection. If you can't tell the difference and the itching is severe, see a dermatologist.

Yes, they look similar, but nits are oval and firmly attached to the hair, unlike dandruff which falls off easily. Blow on it to test.

I once ignored my daughter's itchy head thinking it was just dry scalp dandruff, and within weeks the lice infestation spread to the whole family. Check if the white spots stick to the hair; if they do, treat it immediately with a proper lice shampoo.

Oh, they totally look alike from a distance! But don't stress too much, just try to brush the hair. If the white flakes slide off, it's just dandruff. If they stay glued, it's nits, and you just need a good lice comb.

Nits are tiny, yellowish-white, and glued to individual hair strands near the scalp. Dandruff is dry, flat, and irregular in shape. If you run a comb and the white spot doesn't move, it is definitely a nit.
