Do newborns sleep all day?

My baby is just a few days old and seems to be sleeping almost constantly. Everyone says newborns sleep a lot, but is it normal for them to pretty much sleep through the entire day? Sometimes I feel like she barely wakes up.

They sleep in short cycles of two to three hours throughout the day and night because of their tiny stomachs. If you ever feel your baby is too lethargic to wake up for feeds, consulting your pediatrician is the safest step.

Yes, they do sleep for most of the day, usually around sixteen hours. It is completely normal and you don't need to worry.

They sleep all day, but only in twenty-minute bursts designed to keep you completely sleep-deprived! They love sleeping during the day and throwing a party at 3 AM, so hang in there.

Their little souls are adjusting to this physical world, and sleep is how they preserve their pure life energy. Gentle warmth, a quiet environment, and feeding them on demand will keep their sleep peaceful.

They basically sleep, wake up for a quick milk party, and go right back to sleep! It is their favorite hobby in the first few weeks, so enjoy the quiet times while they last.

My pediatrician explained that newborns do not have a circadian rhythm yet, so they sleep up to eighteen hours spread across the day. They naturally wake up frequently because they require regular feeding to support their rapid growth.
