Do newborns cry in their sleep?

My baby is just two weeks old and sometimes he makes crying sounds even when he seems to be sleeping. It gets me worried often, especially at night. Is it normal for newborns to cry in their sleep like that, or should I be concerned?

When my baby did this, I panicked and took her to Cloudnine Hospital. The doctor clearly explained that newborn sleep cycles are very light and active, causing random cries or smiles, and told me to just wait a minute before picking them up.

My mother used to say babies are just dreaming of their past lives when they whimpered in their sleep. However, our pediatrician explained it is just their active REM sleep cycle and perfectly normal, so we don't need to wake them up.

Haha yes, they are basically processing their very busy day of drinking milk and staring at fans! It is totally normal, they can cry for a second and remain fast asleep, leaving us parents wide awake and terrified.

They absolutely do, and it is the ultimate trick! They will let out a loud cry, you run to their crib, and they are snoring peacefully while your sleep is completely gone for the night.

Oh don't stress too much about it! My little one used to make the weirdest whimpering noises and even cry out loud in her sleep. They are just settling into their sleep patterns, so take a deep breath, they are completely fine.
