Do neurodivergent people need more sleep?

My close friend recently got diagnosed as neurodivergent, and she always complains about feeling exhausted, even after sleeping enough. Is it true that neurodivergent people generally need more sleep than others? I want to understand if this is common for her condition.

My nephew has autism and really struggled with sleep. We found that a warm bath with Epsom salts and keeping the room completely dark helped his brain wind down much faster, so he woke up feeling actually rested.

I have ADHD and honestly feel like a complete zombie unless I get at least nine hours of sleep, but then I feel guilty for sleeping so much. Does anyone else here feel like their brain just needs way more time to shut down and rest?

I noticed my sensory sensitivity is much higher on days I get less than eight hours of sleep. Getting that extra hour of rest is practically like a shield that protects my mental energy for the whole day.

A hyperactive brain consumes a lot of metabolic energy, which might explain the need for extra rest. Along with sleep, avoiding heavy dinners and late-night sugary snacks can help calm the nervous system before bedtime.

I used to beat myself up for needing ten hours of sleep while my peers survived on six. Once I understood my brain is wired differently and processes sensory details intensely all day, I finally accepted my body's need for rest without shame.

Yes, sensory overload is a real thing, and the brain physically needs more time to recover from it during deep sleep. Don't compare your sleep requirements to neurotypical standards; just sleep as much as your body demands.

Every person's body and mind are unique, and some of us just need more rest to feel peaceful. Don't worry about what others say, if your heart and body feel better with extra sleep, then please take that rest lovingly.

Totally! My ADHD brain literally runs a marathon all day, so by nighttime, I am absolutely wiped out. If I don't get a solid nine hours, my focus the next day in college is completely gone.
