Do mental health professionals have to report suicidal ideation?

I've been going through a tough time, and a friend suggested I talk to a mental health professional. My main concern is confidentiality, especially if I mention feeling really low. Do mental health professionals have a duty to report if someone expresses suicidal ideation?

I always worry about this before speaking to my therapist because I don't want my family to get involved. Has anyone else felt scared to share their darkest thoughts because of this? I hope they only report it if there is immediate danger.

They only break confidentiality if they feel the person is in immediate, active danger. A simple way is to discuss confidentiality rules with your therapist in the very first session so you know exactly where the line is.

Yes, therapists have a duty to protect you if there is an active risk of self-harm. Please do not let this keep you from seeking professional help. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, you must go to a hospital or contact a helpline immediately.

Beta, doctors and counselors are bound by duty to save lives. If they feel someone might harm themselves, they have to inform the family for the patient's own safety. It is always best to be open with them and trust their professional judgment.

Hey, don't worry. Therapists won't just report you for having passing thoughts; they only step in if they feel your life is in direct danger. They are there to protect you, not to get you into trouble, so you can speak to them safely.

Usually, the policy is that they only report to emergency contacts if there is an active plan or intent. Most teletherapy apps actually have these terms clearly written in their user agreements. It is good to read those first so you feel comfortable sharing.
