Do kidney stones smell bad?

I've been feeling generally unwell, and sometimes my urine has a really strong, unpleasant smell. Could this be a symptom of kidney stones, and do kidney stones make your pee smell bad?

The stones themselves don't smell bad once they are out and washed. But if your urine smells strongly of ammonia or foul, it is a sign of infection or dehydration. Don't waste time researching online, just get a simple urine routine test done.

Actually, my roommate passed one recently and we were curious. The actual stone didn't have any smell at all after rinsing it, but his pee was smelling really bad before that. Keep drinking water, guys.

The stone itself is just minerals and shouldn't smell. However, when I had a blockage, the trapped urine caused a severe infection that smelled really foul. If you notice a strong, bad smell, please see a doctor immediately to avoid complications.

I was super panicked when I noticed a weird smell while passing my stone and thought my kidneys were failing! But the doctor reassured me it was just because I was highly dehydrated and the urine was super concentrated. Once I drank water, it went back to normal.

I know how stressful and embarrassing it feels when you notice unusual things like this during a painful episode. The stone itself doesn't smell, but the concentrated urine or a mild infection can cause a strong odor. You are not alone in feeling worried, but please check with a doctor.

No, they don't smell bad, they are just tiny, painful rocks. But the whole process can make your urine smell pretty funky if you aren't drinking enough water. Just flush them away and don't try sniffing them!
