Do kidney stones hurt worse at night?

I've been having this terrible pain in my flank area, and it seems to get much more intense at night, making it hard to sleep. Is it common for kidney stone pain to be worse during the night?

They definitely seem to. My sleep tracker showed my resting heart rate shooting up around 2 AM when the spasms started. This usually happens because we drink less water overnight, causing urine to concentrate, plus lying flat can change the pressure in the kidneys.

Yes, I noticed the back ache got much worse whenever I tried to sleep. Since I already struggle with sleep issues due to PCOS, it was really frustrating. Make sure to keep a bottle of water on your bedside table and stay hydrated even during the night.

I was reading about this because my uncle woke up crying at midnight with back pain. Apparently, the body produces less urine and we lie still for hours, which makes the stone pressure build up. It definitely seems like a night-time nightmare.

Absolutely, they do. Most of my friends who had stones ended up in the emergency room between midnight and 4 AM. It is because of the lying down posture and lack of active hydration. Keep your SOS painkillers close by before sleeping.

Yes, the pain peaks at night and ruins your sleep. What worked for me was drinking a full glass of water right before bed, even if it meant waking up once to use the bathroom. Keeping the urine diluted is the simplest way to keep the pain low.

I completely understand how scary it is when that sharp pain strikes in the dark when everyone is asleep. I used to stay awake worrying that it would get worse. Just remember that it is a known pattern for stones, so try not to panic and keep your doctor's emergency number handy.
