Do kidney stones hurt all the time?

I'm experiencing intermittent pain in my side, which sometimes feels sharp and other times dull. My doctor mentioned kidney stones as a possibility. Do kidney stones hurt all the time, or can the pain come and go like this?

Thankfully, no, they don't hurt 24/7. The pain usually behaves like an unwanted guest—it comes in sharp waves, completely ruins your hour, and then leaves you in peace for a bit. Just don't let the quiet periods fool you into skipping your doctor's visit.

My side was hurting so badly yesterday, but today I feel completely fine. Does this mean the stone has passed, or can the pain just stop and come back later? I am a bit confused.

Don't worry, it doesn't hurt constantly. The pain comes in spasms as the ureter tries to push the stone out, so you will get breaks in between. Just use those pain-free moments to rest up and make sure you are following the doctor's prescription.

Actually, they don't hurt all the time, yaar. The pain usually starts when the stone tries to move around, creating these crazy sharp waves. When it is sitting quietly in one spot, you might not feel a thing.

My uncle told me that kidney stone pain is like a wave, and he was right—it comes and goes. While we used traditional warm compresses during pain peaks, trusting the doctor's pain management plan is what really helped me get through it.

In my experience, the pain is definitely intermittent. I only walked or did light movement during the completely pain-free hours, as advised by my doctor. If the pain starts up again, stop immediately and rest.

I can tell you from my past experience that the pain is not continuous. It will hit you sharply and then fade away, giving your body time to rest. Don't be afraid, just make sure you see your doctor for proper care.
